Join In Jamboree . . .

The 2003 World Jamboree is not just for the participants! It is Everybody's Jamboree !

To help to promote the Jamboree within Scout Groups, Colonies, Packs, Troops, and Units, a 60 page Join-In-Jamboree Pack is available from the Scout Association Information Centre on 0845 300 1818. It costs a small fee of £4.50 but is well worth the money as it has plenty of programme ideas, activities and information about the World Jamboree which can be used over the next 18 months (and beyond !)

- Why not invite past jamboree participants to your Join-in-Jamboree event ?
- Why not take photos of your Join-in-Jamboree event and send them to us for our Join-in-Jamboree photo page ?
- Why not combine with other sections and have a Join-in-Jamboree fun day ?
- Why not invite one of your local Thailand Jamboree participants to get involved with your events ?

Below is an example of one of the activity sheets in the Join-In-Jamboree Pack ! However, it does not do the pack any justice as it is a 60 page full colour activity and information pack!

"Understand the importance of rice"

Information

The staple food in Thailand is rice, which is known as khao. Most people in central and southern Thailand eat plain rice, which is known as khao jao, with every meal - even breakfast. All main dishes served in Thailand are accompanied with rice called khao gap. Thailand is one of the largest rice growing countries in the world and exports to many other countries throughout the world. A common greeting in Thailand, in place of "How are you ?" is "Have you eaten your rice today ?"

You need:

about 200 grains of rice!
1 container per team (e.g. bucket, ice cream container)
6 pairs of chopsticks

How ?

  • Divide the group into up to 6 teams
  • Give each team a name of a rice producing country (e.g. Thailand, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, China)
  • Allocate each team an area as their territory and give them a container to use as their rice bank. Place all the rice grains in the centre of the activity area.
  • The object of the game is for each team to collect as many grains of rice as they can back to their country rice bank.
  • Team members should defend their rice bank, as teams from other countries may try to collect rice from other teams' rice banks
  • Team members are allowed to carry only one grain of rice in any one journey and they must only use chopsticks.
  • When the time is up, each country's rice grains are counted.
  • The winning team is the one with the most rice grains.

  Jamboree Woggles

The special 'snake' woggles come in Green, Blue and Yellow. These are £2.50 each. These colour woggles are available for everybody. Later on, there will be some Red versions available for contingent members only. The Red "Join in Jamboree" contingent badges are £1.50 each (and you can re-sell them for £2.00).
