The Explorer Belt

What's it all about?
The Explorer Belt is an award open to older Explorer Scouts (aged 16+) and members of the Scout Network. It is a ten-day expedition that brings a real understanding of a different country, its people and way of life.

The Explorer belt has been described as 'the antidote to the package holiday' as it is designed to help young people develop a real understanding of another country by exploring the country as as member of a small team, meeting local people and completing surprise projects.

Summary of Requirements:
To complete the Explorer Belt, an Explorer Scout or member of the Scout Network must:

  • Be over 16 years old
  • Plan and train for an international expedition as part of a small team
  • Travel to another country and travel through that country over ten days
  • Complete a number of projects - Each Explorer Belt team selects their own major project and has to carry out around ten smaller projects (half of which are chosen by other people and passed to the team 1 day before the expedition starts)
  • Keep a notebook or diary during the expedition
  • Take part in a debriefing after the expedition
  • Make a presentation about the expedition

Recent Explorer Belt Expeditions undertaken by Avon Scouts have taken place in Europe, Uganda, and Poland.
