What Is GAPP?

GAPP is the Global Awareness Partnership Project, Originally a joint project between the Scout Association and the Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, to create a resource of fun activities focused on Global Issues. The project was initially funded by the UK Government. New partnership links are currently being sought.

The resource created is called ‘Bridging the GAPP’ and provides activity ideas on 6 areas of concern to young people world-wide. The resource is centred around the idea of peer education and learning through participation. The 6 topic areas are: Impact On The Environment, Healthy Living, It’s Not Fair (Global Inequality and Injustice), Spending Your Money, Insight (Blindness) & One Wrong Step (Landmines).

What can GAPP do for me?

GAPP can provide you with many activity ideas on Global Issues that can be used in your section as part of a balanced weekly programme or as part of the International Friendship Award. You can get access to these activity ideas in three ways. You can buy a copy of Bridging the GAPP from Gilwell, or borrow one from the County International Team. But by far the best method is to contact the Avon GAPP Team, who can run some activities for you and help you learn more about running GAPP activities and understand Global Issues. GAPPsters are young Leaders, Ventures and Older Scouts who have been trained to work with other young people and give unbiased information on a variety of topics, through games and activities, to enable the people they are working with to make their own informed decisions. The materials have been developed in conjunction with many NGO’s.

How Do I Contact a GAPPster?

There should be GAPPsters in every County and Area in the UK and to contact your nearest one the best place to start is with your ACC(I) or failing that e-mail globalawarenesspartnershipproject@yahoogroups.com . Here in Avon it’s even easier, just email gapp@avonscouts.org.uk

Avon GAPP have run a series of training courses and developed a small team of especially skilled young people to help run events. They have run activities at various Camps including at the Global Development Village at the Avon Millennium Camp. Avon GAPP has slowly developed since January 2000 and will hopefully grow further with the advent of Explorer Scouts and Scout Network.
During April Two members of Avon GAPP attended a national GAPP weekend and developed four new sections to the GAPP material in addition to a new website, and arranging activities for this years Gilwell Reunion.

Forthcoming GAPP Events

  • GAPP Training Course - October
  • Spring Training Weekend
  • Various GDV's during 2004
  • New Zealand Jamboree 2004

You may also wish to ask the GAPP team to run some Join in Jamboree activities as these are very similar to those normally run by the GAPPsters!
