Good communicators PDF Print E-mail

Since taking up my role a short while ago, one challenge has been repeatedly mentioned to me.  This is: the need to improve our internal communications.  We should perhaps not be surprised that getting this right can be tricky, especially given the size and complexity of our organisation.  As you will know from your lives outside of Scouting, many organisations find this difficult.  There is no such thing as an organisation with perfect communications.  But, we all know that some are far better than others.  I want Avon Scouts to be in that category and for our members to feel that this is something that we all do well.  There are about 1,600 adult volunteers and 10,500 youth members in Avon.  For communication to be effective, it mustn’t be one way. I need you to play your part.

Communicating for success

The best organisations see great communication as crucial for success. They invest considerable energy into getting it right.  They set a long term vision and goals to guide their communications.  They don’t just work on harnessing the more formal methods of communication.  They consider how a wide variety of methods can be utilised to best effect.  They plan and co-ordinate these so that they are clear, consistent and targeted. They see communication as interaction.  If you have been reading my blog, you will have seen that I consider this as on of our big goals.  I want you all to feel better communicated with because I think this makes us feel more valued and motivated and helps us to grow the organisation.

It’s good to talk

This blog is one way in which I will communicate and interact with all of you. It’s no replacement for face to face, but it is part of my plan to be more open and accessible. This is my invitation to you to help shape what we do and how we do it. Share your experiences, ideas and views with me and others.  I will use this blog alongside other ways of keeping in touch with you on news and information.  Together we’ll consider our common vision and goals and talk about what inspires us.  I want to hear about your achievements and adventures.  I welcome your suggestions on what subjects you would like me to cover as the blog develops.  What are your suggestions for how we could improve our internal communications?  I will shortly be appointing a Deputy County Commissioner for Marketing and Communications who will be looking to build a team.  We will advertise these roles in due course, but do This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Hi Dan

Welcome to the team and congratulations on your new role although it a little late now.

I have been thinking about communication. I have recently started sending text messages to parents and e-mails for reminders about events or meeting places etc. i am using my personal mobile and e-mail to do this. Do you think it is possible for scouting be it avon or nationally are able to set up the texting systems like the schools where is done on computer rather than mobile. not sure what the cost of this would be though. If groups can have access to this type of system they may be able to communicate with parents better.
just a thought.

REPLY FROM DAN:
Hi Nikki,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Great to hear from you. I like your suggestion. I am not a "techie" so I don't know how easy this is to do. However, I hope soon to be able to announce the appointment of a Deputy County Commissioner for Marketing and Communications. One of their first tasks will be to review where we are now, including testing out what support our Sections, Groups and Districts need in this area. Then, taking account of the longer range vision (which I've spoken about here in previous posts) they'll be putting together a team and a plan to deliver this. I'll make sure your idea receives proper consideration in this process and that we keep you posted on progress.
Thanks again Nikki and good Bever Scouting!
All the best,
Dan

Hi Nikki

I'm the new DCC Marcomms - just in post.

Your suggestion is spot on and I'll ensure I include it within the wider review and strategy Dan talked about. I'm very much for sharing best practice!

It would be very useful for me to understand how you work and the kind of numbers involved so it would be really helpful if we could have a quick chat soon. I'll be in touch!
