Another summer of adventure PDF Print E-mail

As we move in to July with the school holidays now just a few weeks away, I know many of you will be preparing for summer camps and expeditions in the UK and abroad.  Scouts the world over anticipate this season with high expectations, full of wonder and excitement.  These ‘high points’ in Scouting are a chance to consolidate what we’ve learned, build friendships that can last a lifetime and to achieve more than we thought we could.

Stay safe and well this summer

As you have fun and challenge each other, remember to stay safe and be prepared for all the things a summer outdoors might throw at you.  Don’t forget Activity and Nights Away notification requirements, risk assessment (which need not be difficult/complicated!) and your ‘in touch’ procedures.  If you need any further information, advice, guidance or support, make sure you ask your District Commissioner/Team and/or one of the County Team.  They are there to help you.

Using residential experiences to recruit

We should also remember that residential experiences can be one of the best ways to recruit new volunteers (parents/carers) in particular.  The Big Adventure contains lots of ideas and support on how you can seize these opportunities.  Why not take a look if you haven’t already?  If there’s not time this year, the ideas are timeless so keep them in mind for next year.

If what you’re doing is particularly novel, interesting or big, you might even contact your DC or MDM to share the story with the media.  If you do, keep the words and photos “on brand” – it’s all about everyday adventure and enriching lives!  That’s what excites people about Scouting.

And finally…

I wish you all the very best for a healthy, happy and memorable summer of Scouting.  It would be really great if you could share what your plans are by commenting here.  I would be really interested to hear what you’ve all been up to over the summer.  Share your good ideas and achievements.
