Adult 'Canoe Meet' (including Level 1 Coach Course), 21-23 May 2004

This weekend, based in the log cabin at Biblins on the River Wye, is intended for all adults in Avon Scouting who are interested in developing their ability to take youngsters canoeing. Existing authorisation holders will have the opportunity to learn some new skills (e.g. open boating for kayakers - and vice versa, moving water skills, maybe even sea paddling). Existing 2 Star kayakers will have the opportunity to train as Level 1 kayak coaches. Less experienced paddlers will be able to come and 'try things out'. And there will be discussion, debate and social interaction mingled with good food and humour. Something for everyone! (Please note that Level 2 training, 4* kayak and Canoe Safety Test courses may also be run locally this year – contact Steve for details).

Shirehampton Pool Kayaking Courses

These provide an ideal introduction to canoeing, in a warm environment.  Novices gain confidence in basic skills and rescue techniques.  More advanced paddlers will try canoe rolling.  Courses are held between September and Easter and comprise sessions on 2 consecutive Monday evenings from 8.30-10.00 p.m. at Shirehampton Pool, Bristol (approx. £12). All equipment supplied. For further information about course content, phone Lee Coles 0117 330 7230, lee.coles@avonscouts.org.uk.

Bookings to County Office, 01454 613006 or office@avonscouts.org.uk. Note that Baths courses fill up many months in advance.

Canadian Canoe Group

There is an active Canadian Canoe Group within the County. If you'd like any open canoeing activities or courses, contact Dr Chris Grimaldi, 0117 950 1735 for further information.

British Canoe Union (BCU) Star Award Courses

Bookings/enquiries to Steve Coffey, 0117 951 3056, stephen.coffey@avonscouts.org.uk. These are personal performance tests to encourage and develop canoeing.  The Scout Section Canoeist Badge is linked directly to the Two Star Award.  The Two Star level is the minimum of technical expertise necessary for Leaders seeking authorisation to lead canoeing activities.  The following courses are open to Leaders, Scouts and Explorer Scouts (except where stated).  Courses can be tiring and sometimes cold and a reasonable standard of fitness is necessary.  Non-canoeing supporters (e.g. parents or Leaders) are advised. All equipment for courses is provided. Any person providing their own equipment is responsible for obtaining the necessary license to use it in the Docks.

The closing date for each course is 2 weeks before the course starts. Payment must be received before the course and no refunds will be made after the closing date (unless it is cancelled). A course will only run if we have a minimum of 6 people booked on it.
