Evening Sessions

Begin at 7.00 pm and end at 9.00 pm. If you arrive early then please understand that the instructors need time to get ready for your group. If you do arrive early please do not let the young people to go onto the pontoon as people have fallen in. Please be punctual in arrival and ask parents to collect their children promptly. Young people are expected to help get the canoes or kayaks out of the store at the beginning, empty them and put them back afterwards. This is done before getting dry and changed. Guides and Scouts must use the appropriate changing rooms upstairs, which have toilets and showers. There is also a toilet in the boatstore.

Very Important The large room upstairs is not a changing room and, if required for use by non-canoeists during the session, must be booked with Mrs Betty Morris, 0117 963 4110, and paid for (£15.00 per session).

Bookings/Cancelations

If you wish to book and evening session, your session or cancel instructors, please telephone Tish 0117 9048677 or e-mail canoebookings@swhi.co.uk

What Canoeists should wear

A swimsuit or trunks, covered by T shirt and shorts on a warm summer evening. If conditions are wet or winds then we do have some waterproof cagoules. If people are kayaking then they need suitable footwear. Large shoes or boots do not fit in kayaks. People need flexable thin shoes such as wet shoes or thin daps. Even if people are canoeing then they are likely to get wet.

Everyone gets wet to some extent, whether they fall in or not. Therefore everyone needs to bring a complete change of clothes and a towel.

Leadership

All ASAG instructors are qualified with the British Canoe Union. Assistant instructors who are not BCU qualified will not be in charge of a session. All instructors are registered with either the Scout Association or Guide Association as suitable to work with young people.

Groups should be accompanied by a responsible adult, female with girls, male with boys. Mixed gender groups will, therefore, require 2 adults. These accompanying adults are responsible for the general behaviour of the group off the water. If a double session has been booked, using kayaks and canoes, it is the responsibility of the adult with the Group (not the ASAG instructor) to allocate young people to kayaks or canoes.

Very Important Young people should only be on the pontoon with a suitable buoyancy aid.

Safety and Behaviour

Any parental or other permission for canoeing, required by Guide or Scout rules, is the responsibility of the Guide or Scout Leader. Please ensure Guides and Scouts behave with respect to boat residents and others who use the quay. Do not allow them to climb on walls adjoining the Boathouse or Redcliff Caves. All canoeing equipment is provided. Every young person will wear a properly-fitting buoyancy aid. Helmets will be worn for kayaking. The use of spraydecks depends on the experience and preference of the young people.

Ratios

The maximum number for one instructor is eight. Please do not exceed this number unless an additional instructor has been booked.
