BCU New Syllabus 1 star
9th & 10th May 2009
Cost £30
BP Centre Bristol Docks
This new award has only been out a year, the 1 Star is a clear stepping stone to becoming a paddler. Designed as a basic award, the one star is the level people would typically reach after an introductory course of six hours quality water time. The new syllabus is not to be confused with the old 1 star which was a much easer award. You can take your assessment in any style of kayak or canoe and during the course; you will be encouraged to try many different boats so you can decide which you enjoy paddling the most. During the weekend, you will plan and undertake a journey of 3KM. Those that pass the assessment at the end will have proved themselves competent paddlers that can paddle most flat and sheltered water as part of a supervised group. This weekend is only available to over 18’s. Both days will be at the BP Boathouse and Bristol docks.
BCU PADDLEPOWER PASSPORT
16th & 17th May 2009
Cost £30
BP Centre Bristol Docks
Paddlepower Passport comprises four progressive levels that guide the new paddler from the initial “Start” session through twenty-four competencies, skills, and knowledge. These encourage each paddler to achieve a recognisable standard. Adults would achieve a similar standard via the “One Star” criteria. This weekend is aimed at young people over 12 years old that have done an evening session or been on the water before.
BCU New Syllabus 2 star
Starting Saturday 12th September 2009
Cost £40
BP Centre Bristol Docks
This improvement award helps paddlers develop fundamental paddling skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat, and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat, and water interact. The award is obtained by taking the assessment in both a kayak and a canoe. Before assessment, candidates must show experience of 2 different locations e.g. Canal, river, lake/loch, or sea and 2 local competitions or Journeys. Many of these will be available on the course but candidates will need to have some prior paddling experience ideally the new syllabus 1 star. Starting Saturday 12th September the course will run over approximately 4 days however this depends on the group and previous experience. The other dates will be worked out on the first day of the course. Candidates that pass the 2 star award will have proved themselves competent flat water paddlers
