AvonJa Project |
|
| The project began in 1993 as part of the UNITE Programme when Avon Venture Scouts made a 10 year commitment to work in Uganda to build the equivalent of "Woodhouse" (Avon County's Training HQ) on a 10 acre site at Jinja in the east of the country. The aim was to construct a training building and camping ground, to plant orchards and develop vocational training projects. |
|
| The site is located at Buwenda (approximately 3 miles
from Jinja and the source of the Nile). Thanks to the dedication of the AvonJa team
the building is now complete and the site has toilets, mains water, showers and a canteen. The building works are being undertaken by African Scouts from Jinja working alongside Avon Venture Scouts and Leaders. Many close friendships have been forged with the Scouts. In 1993 the first Avon working party made concrete blocks for the foundations; the 1994 party excavated and laid the foundations for the hall (25m x 10m). In 1995 the next party built the walls to eaves level, the room was constructed during the spring of 1996 by Ugandan Scout Students. In that summer the party continued the construction, rendering the walls, building the veranda and completing the roof. 1997 saw the completion of the main building by local contractors after the project was left a generous bequest. The 1997 party wired the building and started work on the shower block, which was completed by the contractor. The building is now in daily use as a Secondary School during the week providing much-needed facility for the local village. The 1998 party set about terracing the sloping campsite as well as erecting fencing and planting hundreds of trees. An adventure course "Challenge Valley" was constructed using local materials and much enjoyed by Ugandan children. The 1999 party built 3 Banda Patrol areas (circular thatched huts with concrete floor and 1/2 walls; excavated the foundations for a small Warden house with 3 rooms for visiting Leader Trainers. It also built an impressive metal entrance gateway, erected 3 metal flagpoles, continued the fencing and carried out routine maintenance. The Millennium AvonJa party constructed a Workshop for vocational training. They continued their outreach to Jinja Scouts in the more rural parts of the District. They were also involved in Uganda 2000 when many UK Scouts will enjoyed the splendid facilities at this stunning campsite on the banks of the River Nile. For the latest information from th Avonja team and details of future plans read the 2002 Report to Avon Scout County Council.
