Setting Scouts or Explorers a challenge of building a raft and then paddling it across a river or Lake combines a lot of what scouting stands for. Personal Development, achievement, skill, leadership and fun all form part of this activity. However for the majority of suitable water (class B1) leaders require an Activity Permit to run this event in scouting. Unlike Sailing, Pulling or canoeing there is no National body for this activity so 3 years ago we developed a training programme and check list to comply with the requirements of POR. We have a team of County Assessors who are all keen water sports enthusiasts and know the benefits of running water activities for scouts so once again we will be running a training day at the Benjamin Perry centre behind Bristol Hospital and the Ostrich PH on the floating harbour. The training day will be held on Sunday 1st April from 10am until 2.30pm and include sessions on safety, Risk assessments, Raft Building, Check lists, Safety cover and concluding with a practical session on the water. Cost will be £10 to cover BP hire, kit hire, tea and biscuits. Please bring packed lunch. More details can be found on Scout base Fact sheet FS120668.
